Sibling Rivalry – 11 – East of Eden & What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

Sibling Rivalry Artwork Episode 11

The dynamic and relatable nature of family relationships has been used in many films as a narrative conceit setting up character development, and a way to create some memorable confrontations. The films we discuss in this episode place emphasis on the rivalries faced by siblings as they try to co-exist with their brother or sister.

The first East of Eden from 1955 is a modern retelling of the story of Cain and Abel from the biblical Book of Genesis and one of the few films to star James Dean. From brothers feuding to sisters trying to kill each other we discuss What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? from 1962 which features Bette Davis and Joan Crawford trying to settle their differences on screen for all to see.
